Additionally, each piece of cork leather features distinctive patterns, ensuring that no two pieces are ever the same. UJUAL embraces individuality and sustainability with cork leather.
How is it made
Cork leather is crafted from the bark of cork oak trees. What makes cork leather particularly unique is its regeneration process: the bark is carefully harvested every nine years, allowing the trees to thrive and continue absorbing carbon dioxide, making it a highly environmentally friendly material.
Despite its benefits, the underutilization of cork has led to an excess of cork waste, contributing to environmental challenges. Many cork oak trees aren't preserved because they are not deemed profitable. However, using cork in various products can significantly mitigate this issue and promote the conservation of these vital trees.
The fabrication process of cork leather involves harvesting the bark from mature cork oak trees without harming them. The bark is then boiled and flattened before being processed into thin sheets. These sheets are combined with a fabric backing to enhance durability and versatility. Finally, the cork leather is ready to be used in a wide range of applications, by choosing cork leather, UJUAL contribute to the preservation of cork oak trees and the reduction of environmental impact.
Wool-Cotton Felt
Wool-cotton felt is considered good for the environment for several reasons. Wool felt, derived from natural fibers, is completely biodegradable. It's a renewable resource since sheep grow a new fleece annually, and shearing, when done correctly, does not harm the sheep and can even be beneficial to them.
This makes wool an environmentally friendly choice as it causes no harm to the environment and does not deplete natural resources.
On the other hand, cotton, as a plant-based fiber, is also biodegradable and when grown under sustainable practices. Combining wool and cotton to create felt results in a material that leverages the benefits of both fibers, offering a sustainable and biodegradable product that aligns with eco-friendly practices.
At UJUAL, the decision to use wool-cotton felt is deeply rooted in our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
This choice reflects UJUAL's ethos of embracing nature-based, sustainable materials to create products that are not only high-quality and durable but also environmentally conscious. Through this, UJUAL aspires to lead by example, showing that it is possible to create beautiful, functional products without compromising the well-being of our planet.
